President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva landed this Sunday (April 19) in Hanover , Germany , continuing his official trip through Europe which has already included Spain .
The agenda in the European country, which extends until Monday (April 20), has as its highlight Brazil ‘s participation as a partner country in Hannover Messe 2026 , the world’s largest trade fair for innovation and industrial technology.
The Brazilian delegation expects to sign around ten bilateral agreements in the areas of defense, artificial intelligence, innovation, infrastructure, energy, bioeconomy, and technological cooperation.
The visit also includes a private meeting with Chancellor Friedrich Merz , a reception at Herrenhausen Palace with military honors, and the official opening of the fair alongside the German leader.
In an official statement , Hannover Messe highlighted the choice of Brazil as an ideal partner ” thanks to its strength in key technologies such as digitalization and renewable energies, as well as its growing geopolitical importance .”
Deutsche Messe CEO Dr. Jochen Köckler stated : “ Brazil is the ideal partner for HANOVER MESSE 2026 , thanks not only to its strength in key technologies such as digitalization and renewable energy, but also to its growing geopolitical importance. In a rapidly transforming global economy, close cooperation with Brazil is of enormous strategic importance. ”
Bilateral trade between Brazil and Germany reached US$20.9 billion in 2025, with German direct investment in the country exceeding US$38.5 billion in the previous year.
The Brazilian participation in the fair occupies 2,700 m² and brings together 140 national companies plus 300 represented companies, with an emphasis on energy transition, hydrogen, digitalization, advanced industry, circular economy and artificial intelligence.
The visit is part of a broader context of consolidating democracy and multilateral strategic partnerships, following the phase in Barcelona dedicated to the defense of democracy.
The agenda aims to attract foreign investment and boost national reindustrialization.
Experts emphasize that the meeting with Merz reinforces alignment on global issues such as the ratification of the Mercosur-European Union agreement, scheduled to provisionally enter into force on May 1st.

O jornal cita que Lula criticou as ações de Trump contra o Irã e outros países latino-americanos, afirmando que ele não pode ameaçar nações com guerra e buscando reformar as Nações Unidas, com a ambição de um assento permanente no Conselho de Segurança.
E que há dificuldades em reformar o organismo, que tem cinco membros permanentes com poder de veto. A proteção climática será um tema importante nas discussões, com a Alemanha prometendo um bilhão de euros para um fundo de proteção da floresta tropical.
Por fim, a mídia lembra que este é o primeiro encontro entre Merz e Lula após a ratificação do acordo de livre comércio entre a UE e o Mercosul.
O jornal Die Zeit também cita, via Agência de Imprensa Alemã (dpa), que Merz e Lula desejam expandir sua parceria estratégica.

Lula busca reformar as Nações Unidas para contrariar a política de Trump e deseja um assento permanente no Conselho de Segurança, que atualmente conta com cinco membros permanentes com veto, todos potências nucleares, mas suas tentativas de reforma têm falhado nas últimas décadas, escreve a mídia.
A proteção climática também deverá ser um tema importante durante as consultas no castelo. Na Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre Mudanças Climáticas em Belém, em novembro passado, a Alemanha prometeu um bilhão de euros ao longo de dez anos para um novo fundo de proteção da floresta tropical.

For his visit to Hanover , Lula made a special request to Merz , the newspaper reports: “I told him that when I travel to Germany, I like to eat sausage from a street food stall,” he told Der Spiegel magazine . “The last time I was in Angela Merkel’s office, I ate a sausage I bought from a stall. When I’m abroad, I try to sample the local cuisine.”
On Sunday evening, instead of street food, a dinner with business representatives is scheduled at the Herrenhausen Palace , according to media reports.
