Brazil’s vice-President Geraldo Alckmin, acting president, criticized President Donald Trump’s new 50% tariff on steel imports, stating it will raise product costs and harm global trade.
“It’s bad for everyone,” Alckmin declared on June 4, 2025, highlighting the tariff’s ripple effects on Brazil, the second-largest steel supplier to the United States.
The tariff, doubled from 25% to 50%, took effect on June 4, 2025, directly impacting Brazil’s steel exports. Minas Gerais, a leading steel-producing state, faces significant economic challenges.
Alckmin emphasized that the measure disrupts the “win-win” trade relationship between Brazil and the United States, urging dialogue to mitigate losses.

Brazil’s steel industry, a cornerstone of its economy, exported $8.6 billion in steel to the United States in 2024.
The tariff threatens jobs and production, particularly in Minas Gerais, where steel plants employ thousands. “We’ll seek talks,” Alckmin noted, aiming to preserve trade ties.
Unlike previous reports, Alckmin’s stance reflects a proactive approach, focusing on negotiation rather than immediate retaliation.
The Brazilian Steel Institute (IABr) warned that higher tariffs could reduce exports by 20%, affecting local economies and global supply chains.
The United States implemented the tariff to protect its metal industries, with Trump celebrating the move in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
However, Alckmin argued that “protectionism harms global markets,” raising costs for consumers and industries worldwide.
